Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
Work Camp 2005 - Accident, Maryland
Each of our youth and chaperones began their day with a devotion and breakfast. They gathered their tools and lunches and traveled to one of 56 different work sites. A work site is usually the home of someone unable to make the needed repairs or to maintain their home in good condition. Each site has unique tasks and the youth worked gladly to accomplish all that was required of them. Some work crews built porches or wheelchair ramps, others painted both inside and outside of the homes, still others helped repair or re-roof.
The days were hot and caused much sweat to be produced but there were rewards. Often the residents would bake cookies for their work crew. One crew had their resident join in work with them telling stories and sharing his life. When he became tired, for he was truly 74 years old, he would ride his bicycle around town. During lunch at the work sites the youth, chaperones and, sometimes even, the residents would eat lunch together and partake in a time of devotion. It has been said that our youth now have newfound grandparents in Accident, Maryland.
After a challenging yet gratifying day at their sites the youth returned to their staging area, Northern High High School. Here they "chilled" and used the classrooms for dormitories. You can see from the photographs that we really are talking about teenagers! Following dinner they had daily worship services. Then our group met together to have a time of Bible study and more "chillin"!
Wednesday afternoon all of the groups had the afternoon off to relax and fellowship with their church groups. Our GS youth spent time at the Ludwig's place at Deep Creek. You can see that they had fun and food to take in that afternoon.
