Worship Servant Opportunities
Serving at Worship
Good Shepherd members are encouraged to help in worship as individuals or as a family. For each worship service we need two people to be "Greeters", a reader, communion assistants and help bringing the bread and wine forward.
Click here to see the current schedule for worship assistants.
Greeters arrive about 15 minutes before the service begins and stand just outside the Narthex (the room with the clear glass doors just before the sanctuary.) Greeters welcome everyone as they come to the Narthex doors with a hand shake and perhaps an exchange of words. Please take your seat in the sanctuary after the prelude music is finished.
Readers at the indicated time of the service, the reader approaches the altar, bows (out of respect) and steps up to the lectern (the little stand at the front left of the altar area that has the Bible and microphone). Here the reader should find the scripture passage marked by two little post-it notes. The Reader reads the passage and concludes with "The word of the Lord." After the congregation responds, "Thanks be to God" you may return to your seat.
Bread and Wine These two people stand at the rear sanctuary doors behind the ushers who have just collected the offering. One person may carry the goblet of wine; they other person carries the cup of bread wafers. When the ushers move forward to the altar to present the offering, follow them. After the acolyte takes the offering from the ushers, present the bread and wine to the pastor. After giving the bread and wine to the pastor, please walk back to your seat.
Communion Assistants This small group of people will approach the altar area as the pastor(s) are blessing the elements for communion. The pastor(s) will give each communion assistant their communion bread and wine. Then each assistant will be given something to help with distributing communion to the congregation. Stand in front of the altar platform (next to a pastor usually) and wait for the people to approach. If you have bread wafers you say to each person, "The body of Christ given for you." If you hold the wine or grape juice say to each person, "The blood of Christ shed for you." When everyone has received communion, return to the rear of the altar and set your item on the table for the acolyte to arrange. Then return to your seat.
Join these servants Sundays or on a weekly team.
Teams prepare the sanctuary for worship and the elements for Holy Communion.
