July Building Committee Update: Building Bandwagon V
Our new facilities are now secure; that is they are lockable! This is a huge milestone because it allows the contractor to install building material and equipment that is vulnerable to the environment and vandalism.
A second milestone, gigantic by Good Shepherd’s standards, involves the roof. As I write this article on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, the roofers are removing the “holely” roof above the hallway, new bathrooms, the fireside room, and the connector between our current sanctuary building and the education building. Our local weatherperson has promised no rain for three days and by Thursday, July 3, 2008, these areas should be leak free. If more problems are encountered than anticipated, there may be still some minor leaks on Sunday July 6, but by Sunday July 13 all leaks will be history, guaranteed! (As a much younger man, I once guaranteed my barber that I would not lose my hair.)
The roof over the new construction is complete except for the heating/air conditioning units that are scheduled to be in place by July 3, 2008. In the next Building Bandwagon article (August 3), I hope to be reporting that we have been “leak free” for several weeks!
Progress in the new sanctuary includes:
• The 18 small stained glass windows have been delivered and installed.
• The sanctuary ceiling has been sealed.
• The chancel platform steps are in place.
• The organ loft (to support 8000 lbs) has been engineered and approved.
The second level administrative area has been framed out and additional electrical wiring and duct work have been installed throughout the building.
Final approvals of our water and sewer connections by WSSC are still pending. We continue to make progress, but lack of these approvals will certainly begin to impact our progress within the next few weeks. This is a high priority item!
July Schedule
• On site sewer – to be started (Hurry up, WSSC).
• Retaining walls for patio and lower level entrance footings to be poured.
• Chancel stairs and platform – to be completed.
• Insulation and drywall to be installed.
For July the front row seats of the Building Bandwagon
are reserved for:
• Our musicians (especially Peter Schmidt) who have used
umbrellas in the fireside room without complaining (too much).
• The ladies of our church who have tolerated the leaking roof in the new
women’s bathroom.
• Our furnishings committee (Mark Meuschke, chair) for excellent progress on
sanctuary furniture and floor covering throughout the building
