Day-By-Day Updates (scroll down for more photos and the Building Committee's monthly update)
Friday, February 1, 2008 The rain has fallen steady and quickly all day. The outside construction remains waiting for the sun while inside the bathrooms continue to show progress. Peek into the windows to see what's going on!
Friday, February 8, 2008 With great warm weather this week the wall of the church basement are going up rapidly. A tour of the bathrooms also reveals all the dry wall in place, spackling finished, and soon the paint will go on! See photos below.
Friday, February 15, 2008 Today a large crane lowered the beams into "The Pit" for placement. (See photos below.)
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 Praise Painting arrived today to put the primer coat of paint onto the bathrooms while outside the support beams are being placed to receive the sanctuary floor panels which should arrive on Monday.
February Building Committee Update: Our new church is rising – block by block and door frame by door frame. I invite you to take a peek into the “hole” each week when you worship at Good Shepherd. By the middle of February the basement walls should be completed and by the end of February the precast concrete sanctuary floor should be in place. (The “hole” will have been transformed into our unfinished basement!) In early March the on-grade concrete slab for the narthex, kitchen, and adult meeting room will be poured. You will again be able to see the location of the main entrance to our new facilities. All this progress is just a prelude to the arrival of the laminated octagon arches that are expected just prior to Easter Sunday. As we come to Good Shepherd to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord in worship space that has served us well for 30 years, we will be seeing our new sanctuary rising up from the dust and dirt of the demolition and excavation of 2007. Christian symbolism is scattered throughout our building process.
Construction of our new bathrooms is proceeding with all deliberate speed. The drains and water lines are in place, the studs are erected, and the drywall is scheduled to be hung during the last few days of January. The firewall that separates the bathrooms from the narthex/lobby is being erected. Our furnishings subcommittee has chosen the partitions, the flooring, the counter tops, and the paint. The goal is to have operating bathrooms by or before Easter Sunday.
The furnishings subcommittee chaired by Mark Meuschke held its first meeting in mid-January. They are providing much needed coordination of the interior finishes (paint, carpet, floor tile, ceiling tile, etc.) as well as the furnishings for the sanctuary (chairs, chancel furniture, etc.).
The stained glass window subcommittee chaired by Elise Bowman is working with Statesville Stained Glass on the design and specifications for new stained glass windows. Guardian Alarm Systems, Inc. (Germantown) has been chosen to supply the access control and security system for our entire facility. The Lawless-Johnson Organ Company made a preliminary presentation to the building committee in January. We expect a more detailed proposal in the very near future. Discussions with telephone and internet system suppliers are moving toward final proposal stage.
Although there is much work to be done and decisions to be made in a relatively short period, I am greatly encouraged by the willingness and enthusiasm displayed by the many people who are involved in our building process. The increased participation of the congregation in the building process insures that we will have the best facility to support our ministry for years to come.
