Day-By-Day Updates (scroll down for more photos and the Building Committee's monthly update)
See photos below.
Our Fellowship Hall, lobby, and narthex have been torn down and hauled away. The excavation for the octagon building is proceeding and will be completed by mid December. The exact location of our new sanctuary is now quite obvious from the walkway off of S. Westland. Equally impressive is the large unexcavated space between our building and the “hole” that will become our entrance, lobby, kitchen, and meeting room. Now, you have to imagine what our new building will look like. In the months ahead, block, timber, windows, and shingles will turn those images into reality.
Major demolition and construction on a limited site certainly presents challenges. Construction debris and dirt must be immediately hauled away. Space must be found for a dumpster, construction trailer, and equipment and material storage. Every effort is being made to retain as many parking spaces as possible. A very special thanks to our many worshipers who park off site.
We are pressuring Total Construction to speed up the work on the new bathrooms. A bathroom entrance way has been created from the hallway, but additional masonry work must be completed prior to removing the plastic enclosure in the hallway. The concrete floor has been cut and is being jack hammered for installation of the drains. The routing of the drains has been changed to avoid disturbing the hallway.
A contract has been signed with Moorefield Communications of Camp Hill, PA for the sound and video systems for our new sanctuary. Soon a contract will be signed with Statesville Stained Glass of Statesville, NC for the stained glass windows in our new sanctuary. The recent closing of the construction loan with Thrivent has permitted us to move forward on these important items.
The storm water management system (under the playground) has been completed and provides a holding basin for roof water from all of our existing buildings. A drain line for roof water from all new construction will be installed at a later date near the sidewalk along Rt. 355 and will tie directly into the existing storm water line along Rt. 355. To allow for installation of this additional drain line, the size of the playground and variety of play equipment have been temporarily reduced. The re-establishing of the playground provides a better-equipped and safer play area for our preschool. Many thanks to our preschool staff and parents (particularly Kerry Hurley) for patience during the first three months of the school year and to John Redmon (Triple “J” Construction) for quickly re-establishing the playground.
A sample wall of the proposed building exterior (split-faced block) has been constructed outside of our former office windows close to the existing brick wall. I encourage you to stop and see how the new split-faced block will interface with the existing brick. The Building Committee is faced with many decisions on building finishes: stain for laminated arches and ceiling panels, accent block around the cross, caps for the retaining walls, elevator colors and panels, wall paint colors, floor coverings, roof colors, etc. Since many of these choices are interdependent, we see the need for general coordination of all of the choices that will narrow the acceptable range within a particular category. Final selection will then be made within the acceptable range.
