Day-By-Day Updates (scroll down for the building committee's monthly update)

Thursday, August 2, 2007 - The first trailer has been moved in! It's been a hot day for the truck driver but he faithfully put the trailer on site, leveled it and prepared it for our office to move into.

Friday, August 3, 2007 - The second trailer is delivered, TCS is onsite preparing to start work next week, the electrician from Bopat is onsite preparing for work next week too. The second trailer still needs the security windows installed and to be put in its final place. Both trailers need electricity and cable connections before staff can occupy. Vicki Schmidt is working with Ernie Kessler to have stairs/ramps constructed for trailer access.

Monday, August 6, 2007- TCS site supervisor, Jim, arrived around 8:30am to unload lumber and get crew working on the Sanctuary doors to be cut this week. First they are preparing the areas by cocooning them to contain the dust from cutting the cinder blocks. An electrician is also onsite preparing to bring electricity to the temporary trailers and prepare for the demolition.

Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - TCS arrived at 7:00am to unload more lumber and continue to cocoon areas in the Sanctuary for cutting the new doors. The electricians are also onsite again continuing to work on the trailer electricity. Please continue to pray for these workers for safety and that the love of Christ might reflect on them from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Monday, August 27, 2007 - TCS continues to work on building the first new doorway into the sanctuary, Joe Stavely is constructing the steps for the first trailer entrance, Jason and Sandy Redmon spent the day doing moving, painting, and unbolting two more pews to prepare for construction.

Building Committee Update – August 2007 - Ernie Kessler – Building Committee Chair

At the beginning of 2007, Pastor Dave likened our building process to a hurdle race. He challenged us to run the race and do whatever it takes to cross the hurdles that we meet along the way. We have just crossed a major hurdle! A construction contract has been signed with Total Construction Services, Inc. of Ellicott City, Md. The construction phase of our “Growing in Ministry, Building to Serve” campaign has begun.

During construction, the monthly Building Committee reports will include a list of what has been accomplished during the past month and a list of what is likely to occur during the coming month. We will keep you informed about unexpected problems and how we plan to solve them. Several sub-committees will be making decisions concerning building finishes (carpet choices, stained-glass windows, lighting fixtures, security system, etc.) in the coming months. If you have a particular interest or expertise, please contact me ASAP.

Since the congregational meetings (June 10, July 22) and the Groundbreaking Ceremony (July 8), the preparation of the Fellowship Hall for demolition has proceeded with all deliberate speed. Pastor Dave has temporarily located his office in the soon to be torn down music office. Our music ministry has been relocated in the fireside room. The playground has been removed and stored to allow installation of the storm water management system. The soda machine and the refrigerator have been moved to the youth room. The salvageable kitchen appliances, the round tables, older rectangular tables, the communion railings, Christmas decorations, fireside room furniture, etc. have been moved to storage. Our shed is being rehabilitated to provide on-site storage. Comfortable chairs have replaced the back pews.

Within the next few weeks, the administrative staff will be relocated into two office trailers that will be anchored next to our wooden fence. New doors will be cut into our sanctuary and the sanctuary lighting and sound controls will be relocated. Temporary sewer, water, telephone, and internet lines will be installed so that we can continue to operate when our Fellowship Hall is demolished. The storm water management trench will be completed and the playground re-installed in time for the start of our fall pre-school term. We anticipate that demolition will occur in late August to early September.

Expect to see more and rapid changes in our church building during August. More help is needed to remove equipment and salvage items from our soon to be demolished Fellowship Hall. Please call 301-963-5910 or e-mail bekessler@verizon.net for more specific servant (volunteer) information and opportunities. This is a great way to become a hands-on contributor to “Growing in Ministry, Building to Serve.”
