Good Shepherd Lutheran Church

Roberta Sybrant, Ministry Support

Roberta is a native Washingtonian, born at Georgetown University Hospital on a Labor Day. She grew up in the suburbs - in Greenbelt, MD, and then Silver Spring, where she went to school at Northwood, and she worshiped and sang Sunday School songs at First Baptist Church. Roberta and her dad, husband, and children all proudly share the same alma mater, the University of Maryland, College Park.

Before coming Good Shepherd, Roberta had several work experiences: dietitian at the Washington Hospital Center and at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Greater Miami, research assistant at the Department of Agriculture, and clerk-typist in the Internal Revenue Service. For one year she volunteered for the American Red Cross at Walter Reed. When Roberta and her family moved to Olney 30 years ago, they joined Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church. She has loved teaching Sunday School children, serving as a Stephen Minister, singing in the Choir, and playing handbells.

The greatest love and joy in Roberta’s life is her family - her husband, their three children and their spouses, and seven beautiful grandchildren! Their newest grandchildren are twins - a boy and a girl!

In January, 1980, Roberta began her days working and serving at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Route 355 had just been widened from 2 to 6 lanes. Pastor Dan was preaching in the new sanctuary. Elsie Anderson was the part-time church secretary working in the new church office, equipped with a typewriter, mimeograph, telephone, but no copier yet! (That came in 1983.) Roberta joined the staff and joyfully shared the title of secretary with Elsie for her first 10 years here. “Every day, I thank God for bringing me to this wonderful place to serve him, side by side with such loving, kind and faithful people. Each one in this flock truly brings a unique and treasured gift. God is good.”
