Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
Social Ministry Housing Benefit Concert
May 3, 2008
Made in America, A Celebration!
Those who
“celebrated” songs and literature by American artists at Good Shepherd’s Social
Ministry Concert to benefit low-income housing needs, have another reason to
celebrate: the concert raised nearly $5,500 including a $1,600 contribution by
Thrivent.
Ninety talented
men, women, and children, ranging in age from 3-82, took the stage at Asbury’s
Rosborough Theatre on May 3, 2008. They were ably supported by more than 18
others who shared their talents behind the scenes to make the show, reception,
and equipment move happen.
Entitled, “Made
In America: A Celebration” this year’s talent show started with the premise that
the cast was part of “Good Shepherd Live” (WGSL), a radio show, hosted by the
suave Don Fick. Of course, those in the studio audience had the good fortune to
both hear and see the show—a definite advantage with all the colorful
performances.
The Beach Boys,
Andrew Sisters, George Burns, Johnny Cash, Aaron Copeland, and Dr. Seuss were
some of the great American artists saluted by the show. The audience also took
the opportunity to show their appreciation to another great American--performer
Steve Cromwell, who is the last survivor of the men who landed in the first wave
of the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach.
All show proceeds are donated to local organizations that provide funds to prevent people in crisis from becoming homeless. The first annual Social Ministry Concert/talent show/fundraiser was held in 1985, when Gail and Albert Smith co-chaired the Social Ministry Committee.
Thank you to
everyone who joined in the fun to raise the funds for this important ministry! A
special thank you to the studio audience members who supported the show by their
attendance. You can only imagine how good you looked when you all rose singing
to join the finale on the Battle Hymn of the Republic!
Rumor has it that next year’s theme may encompass songs and literature from around the world. It’s never too early to get your act together.

The concert included kinds of musicians all, including singers both short... |
...and tall. |
|
|
|
|
We had retired soldiers dressed in red, white, and blue... |
...and future Olympic athletes playing bells, too. |
|
|
|
|
There were instrumentalists playing piano and guitar... |
...and, of course, food and drink were never far. |

|
Thank you to the coordinators and host of the event... |
...because with their help over $5000 to charity went. |
