Good
Shepherd is strongly committed to community service through our Social Ministry
program, which identifies and coordinates outreach programs to help people in need. The committee is dedicated to making sure that the entire congregation reaches
out to the less fortunate through a variety of programs that truly embody the Christian spirit.
"Just Come!" Disaster Recovery Teams - join a mission team as they travel to disaster areas of the Gulf Coast to help with rebuilding efforts. Read the "Just Come" Newsletter.
Souperbowl Sunday - takes place each February. Bring in your canned goods this Sunday to vote for your favorite team and provide food for needy families in Gaithersburg.
Lord's Table Soup Kitchen - an interfaith soup kitchen that serves those in need. We need 12 people each 4th Monday of the month to help prepare meals from 1:00 to 3:00pm and to serve and clean up from 3:00 to 5:30pm. Even if you cannot make a monthly commitment, please consider being a substitute. For more information contact Carole Weikert, 301-963-0063, or to let her know that you will help. If you would like to make a financial donation, please send to: The Lord's Table, St. Martin's Catholic Church, 201 S. Summit Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20877.
Gaithersburg
HELP. Founded by Good Shepherd and now supported by most area churches, the program helps needy
people with food, transportation and money. The program is a part of the
Upper Montgomery Assistance Network.
Community Ministry of Montgomery County. This program supports, among many things, the Community-Based Shelter for the homeless and the Thanksgiving Hunger Drive. It also acts as a community advocate, educating elected officials of the needs of the under-served and providing a forum for service groups to work with government agencies.
Annual Social Ministry Benefit Concert. Held at Good Shepherd, the concert features Good Shepherd's musicians, dancers and poets for an evening of performing arts. Funds go to helping local needy families maintain and remain in their homes.
Gifts of Hope. This alternative gift-giving program in the Metropolitan
Washington, DC, Synod (ELCA), is starting its 12th season. Combined
purchases over the past 16 years totaled more than 2 million dollars. There
are no overhead expenses in Gifts of Hope. Every dollar that you spend on a
Gift of Hope is spent for that purpose.
Gaithersburg Holiday Giving Program. This program distributes toys and food store
gift cards to over 500 Gaithersburg families in December. Local
congregations, businesses, and residents provide the donations for this
amazing outreach.
Stamps for NLH – This program collects canceled postage stamps for the National Lutheran Home. Please cut or tear off the canceled postage stamps from your personal mail leaving a wide margin and bring them to the Helping Hands Corner in the Lobby.
