History:
Good Shepherd Preschool is celebrating its nineteenth year as an outreach of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Initially opening its doors in 1991 to three year old and pre-kindergarten students, Good Shepherd added an afternoon program in 2000. Beginning in 2005, classes for older two year old students were included. Since receiving approval from the Maryland State Department of Education in early 1992, Good Shepherd has maintained its goal of academic excellence within a warm, caring, Christian environment.
Staff:
All staff members meet the educational requirements of the Maryland State Department of Education. The Director and the Teachers of Early Pre-Kindergarten II, Early Pre-Kindergarten III, and all Pre-Kindergarten classes have Bachelor or Graduate degrees, teaching experience, and special training and college level coursework in Early Childhood Education. In accordance with child-care regulations, teachers of the Early Pre-Kindergarten I classes have, at minimum, a high school diploma, concentrated college level coursework in early childhood psychology and methodology, and extensive training in a preschool setting. The Director, Teachers, and Assistant Teachers participate in the Maryland Child Care Credential program which requires extensive continuing education in Child Development. All staff members are certified in First Aid and CPR and are active members of area Christian congregations.
The School Year:
Good Shepherd Preschool is in session 163 days from September to Memorial Day. Good Shepherd shares many of the holidays and in-service days of the Montgomery County Public Schools, but not all. An annual calendar is distributed during the first month of school.
