Two Plus Class

This class serves as an introduction to the formal school setting. The children in this class will turn three during the first six months of school. They should have the interest and the ability to enjoy school activities. Teachers provide a warm and caring atmosphere where children can feel safe and secure while learning to separate from the home environment. In the classroom, students participate in open ended art activities using a variety of mediums and an assortment of tools sized appropriately for small hands. Teachers focus on the social and self-help skills needed for working in a group. Emphasis is placed on sharing, on listening to stories in small groups, on establishing classroom routines, and on developing appropriate vocabulary to express feelings and needs. Construction sets, blocks of many sizes, Duplos, trains and other manipulatives allow children to create and explore at their individual level. Children this age respond readily to songs and finger plays; therefore, musical activities are incorporated into the curriculum in a variety of manners.

Totally Three Classes

This class is designed for children who turn three years of age by September 1st. Children enter at a variety of ability levels. The teachers have specifically designed their curriculum to meet the unique learning needs of three-year-old students. Time is spent on establishing routines, developing self-help skills, taking care of the classroom materials, and learning how to play cooperatively with friends. Basic skills such as cutting, holding a marker or crayon, creating with playdough, constructing with manipulatives, following directions, etc. are emphasized. Many cognitive concepts are introduced; children have opportunities to work with numerals and alphabet letters in a variety of informal settings. Monthly curriculum themes introduce the children to new vocabulary and to new learning experiences. Songs and finger plays are used to enhance the monthly themes. Circle times are very short at the beginning of the year and expand as the children mature. Children perform science experiments, play games, hear stories, and participate in flannel board activities during group times. A Totally Three Class teaches children that school is a wonderful place to be. It provides them with the opportunity to develop close relationships with adults outside their home and to expand their own social network of friends.

Three Plus Class

This class is designed for children turning four during the school year. The curriculum encompasses the objectives of a Totally Three Class, while pulling numerous objectives from the Pre-Kindergarten program. Because of their age, this class generally has a more involved circle time and the monthly themes are explored with more vocabulary and depth.

Pre-Kindergarten Classes

Each Pre-Kindergarten Class is designed to promote kindergarten readiness as defined by the Montgomery County Public Schools. Emphasis is placed on developing fine motor skills, including pencil grip and beginning writing skills, correct use of scissors and development of cutting skills, and construction with small manipulatives. The children experience both open-ended and directed arts and crafts activities. Through these activities, children explore their own creativity, learn to follow directions, and work on basic skills.

Every Pre-Kindergarten Class has one or two circle times, totaling fifteen to twenty minutes each. Chants, rhyming finger plays and songs provide opportunities to distinguish sounds and to hear likenesses in words; such phonemic awareness is an important first step towards reading. Alphabet activities help children recognize the letters and their associated sounds.

The Preschool has a wide selection of manipulatives that provide children with “hands-on” opportunities to learn basic math concepts. Students are exposed to a variety of math activities that help them count, recognize numerals, order objects, sequence by size, sort objects by type, make sets of objects, and measure. These basic math skills provide a strong foundation for higher math concepts.

The skill sets offered through the GSLP Pre-Kindergarten program, regardless of class, correspond to the MSDE Voluntary Curriculum and national standards for early childhood education. Children in the three day classes will cover the basics. Children in the four day class have more time to further explore the concepts.

Pre-Kindergarten Plus Classes

These classes follow the same curriculum as the three-day and four-day pre-kindergarten classes. However, the fact that the classes are in session five days per week means that the basic instruction is enhanced through additional activities. This class is appropriate for children with sufficient stamina and interest in learning to embrace school five days per week. Children engaged in extensive extracurricular activities may find the program exhausting.

Pre-Kindergarten Enrichment Program

Enrichment sessions meet approximately three times per month. Pre-Kindergarten students may supplement their regular class at one or both sessions. After eating lunches brought from home, students explore curriculum concepts, enjoy art activities, outdoor time and a formal circle time. Payment is made in two equal installments.
