News worth noting from the Health Ministry…
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no states have widespread flu activity as of early November. Texas and New York reported localized outbreaks while other states reported only sporadic cases. CDC officials warned that it is too early to determine how severe the outbreak will be for this season.
The CDC indicated that state health departments would receive the full amount of their expected flu vaccine despite remaining widespread shortages. Apportionment of the vaccine will be based upon a formula taking into consideration how many high-risk individuals remained unvaccinated. 1.3 million doses will be stockpiled to use in the event of a flu emergency.
United Health Foundation, a public health research organization, has released a health ranking of the states, based on several variables. Virginia ranked 20th, Maryland ranked 34th, and Pennsylvania ranked 25th (1st place ranking represented the healthiest). Minnesota was ranked in 1st place. (Washington Post, November 8, 2004).
