Frontline Devotion for Wednesday, January 14, 2009 by Penny Risen
I Peter 1: 3 "What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have Him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we've been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven - and the future starts now! God is keeping careful watch over us and the future. The day is coming when you'll have it all - life healed and whole." New Living Translation Bible
We're all just renting, you know. God's leased us this wonderful life we live. He's secured a place for us and has a plan for our future. What a gift, this promise of home!
But are we being good tenants? Do we take care of our souls and our bodies? When we'd rather spend our time in selfish and sinful pursuits, do we turn back toward the One to whom we owe so very much? If we lose patience and perceive we're not getting what we deserve, how can we turn around to see others' needs instead?
The expression "living on borrowed time" may be seen by some as a pessimistic one. But since we wake up each morning by God's grace, and we travel through each week in the palm of His hand, knowing the Father is holding our lease is a precious thing.
Jesus paid the cost for our salvation; He ransomed us from death from sin, and gave us a place to live in forgiveness. When we're ready to come home, our room is ready and paid for.
Singer/songwriter
Chris Tomlin delivers a heart-felt
reminder of the welcome which God always holds out to us. In the composition "Come
Home Running," Tomlin's prayer is to know the Lord's love and to embrace His
treasure of home:
"Oh heart of mine, why must you stray? From one so fair you run away. And one more time you have to pay, the heaviness of needless shame.
Oh heart of mine, come back home. You've been too long out on your own. And He's been there all along, watching for you down the road.
So come home running, His arms are open wide. His name is Jesus. He understands. He is the answer you are looking for. So come home running, just as you are.
Oh child of God, so dearly loved and ransomed by the Savior's blood. And called by name, 'daughter' and 'son' wrapped in the robe of righteousness."
Amen.
Editor's Note: "Come Home Running" is on Chris's "Not to Us" CD and can be purchased on his web site.
