GARRISON KEILLOR SHOWED UP

A daily

Frontline Devotion for Friday, April 4, 2008 by Fritz Foltz

Matthew 24: 42 Keep awake, for you do not know on what day our Lord is coming.

I want to tell you about the day Garrison Keillor showed up for Church. I’d like to think he came to hear me preach, but the truth is he simply went to the nearest Lutheran Church. Remember he is a Lutheran.

He was in town, because one of his closest friends once lived in Gettysburg. He just showed up, looked around, and sat down next to one of our “good old boys”. I know it was him, because he was wearing red socks. The “good old boy” had no idea who he was. After the service he made some remark about worshipping with a mighty strange guy.

You can imagine how I felt having to preach to one our age’s best story tellers. You can see why I chose today’s text. It was something like the Lord showing up when I was not prepared.

But I assured myself I could earn the master’s favor. I preached like mad, adding color as I went, occasionally glancing at the man in red socks to see how I was doing.

I waited anxiously after the service, trying not to act too impressed. He walked up. “Nice to have you here”, I said. “Thanks”, he responded as he headed for the awkward woman who had sung a solo. He launched into a long, flowery admiration of her work, thanking her profusely for her singing. “You look familiar. Do I know you?” she asked. “No, I don’t think so” he responded as he walked away.

Guess, I think that’s what it is going to be like when the Lord Himself shows up. He not going to pay much attention to the leaders who have gotten all the praise they need. Instead he will pick out the shy ones and make their day. You see, we eventually let the singer know whom her admirer was, after we had our fun.

Let us pray: Come to us, Jesus, as you came to Mary and the apostles on that first Easter. Make our day. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
