Frontline Devotion for Thursday March 27, 2008 by Pastor
Dave Sonnenberg
Reprinted From April 19, 2004
The Gospel records the story of how, on the day of Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples had locked the door where they were staying. They were fearful and the Gospel writer does not want us to miss that key point- namely, they locked the doors.
We lock our doors in countless ways on the Frontlines of this world. We lock them by our attitudes, our fears, our arrogance, our insecurity, and countless other ways. I’ll leave it to you to explore how you might “live behind locked doors” from time to time.
I am reading a book on Celtic Spirituality (Celtic Worship Throughout the Year by Ray Simpson), which is one of the most insightful books I’ve ever read. I hope in future devotions to share more thoughts from it as it has great relevance for the 21st century walk of faith. As I was reading through this book and thinking about the “locked doors in our lives”, I came across this wonderful prayer. I hope you will pray it this day.
“Lord, make us ready to be pilgrims for love of you, to go wherever you open the doors. Open the doors of devotion to your word;
Open the doors of devotion to prayer and vigil;
Open the doors of devotion to the eternal mysteries;
Open the doors of devotion to sorrow and restitution;
Open the doors of devotion to good deeds;
Open the doors of devotion to truth and justice.
Good and gracious God, grant us a glimpse of your glory.
Deliver us from the darkness of night.
Give us a share with your saints in light
That we too may live to your glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen
