HOW OLD DO YOU THINK I AM?

A daily
Spiritual
Growth Opportunity

Frontline Devotion for Tuesday, March 11, 2008 by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg
Reprinted from March 21, 2003

Like most of you, I am thinking a lot about the war in Iraq. I find myself turning to public radio every time I get in the car to get the updates (trying to reserve that as my time to catch up!) on what's happening. I was listening this morning very attentively, when all of a sudden I heard my daughter's voice from the back seat, "daddy, turn the radio off. I gotta question for you." So I turned off the radio. "Daddy, you were born when there were dinosaurs. What were dinosaurs like?" I laughed to myself thinking, "how old do you think I am?"

I got into saying how dinosaurs lived a long time ago, long before us. She asked, did they live right here, "right by the Burger King?" I said I didn't know. She asked something else I didn't know the answer to before I switched topics. Our car ride ended about 2 minutes later, but I was taught once more by a child. I was reminded once more that people in my midst yearn to learn. They want me to be present and not be overwhelmed by the things I can not control. My child reminded me that I have teaching opportunities here and now. She reminded me to turn off the radio and "tune in" to her.

It can be so easy to "tune out" the people around us. It can be so easy to forget that each day has countless God given teaching moments. Most likely you won't get someone asking you to tell you about your dinosaur days, but I have no doubt that others want you to "tune in". Tuning in and listening to others is one of the ways you can demonstrate the compassion of God.
