FAITH TO MOVE MOUNTAINS

Frontline Devotion for Monday, February 11, 2008 by: Fritz Foltz

Matthew 17:14-21

We were driving to visit my ailing aunt when my wife, Faith Ann, remarked,  "Moving mountains is easy.  Look, they are doing it right over there."  And sure enough people were, cutting into the side of a mountain to build a new road. They were moving a mountain not with faith but with caterpillar tractors and other huge machinery. She reminded me we have become very good at building mountains as well.  Already fifteen years ago the second highest point on the East Coast was the New York City garbage pile.  In fact, garbage dumps are becoming natural resources.  Germany has already converted one into a ski slope.

Faith Ann suggested the trick was to perceive which mountains God wants us to move. So as we drove we began to list them: all those mountains of despair in the inner city, mountains of deceit, mountains of ignorance, mountains of poverty.

For all our great knowledge and power, our society has never even solved the most basic problems of life.  We still have not fed and clothed and housed all our people.  And because we have been unable to do that yet, it takes great faith to continue attacking those mountains.

We do not attack those mountains, because we have faith in our own abilities. Christian faith is trust that God helps us when we do his will. Using faith to remove the mountains that stand between us and God’s kingdom is to tackle a tough problem with the confidence that God works with us. We dedicate our lives to moving those mountains, because we know God assures our success ultimately.

Let us pray: Grant us faith, Lord, that we might live each day confident that you share our lives. Grant us the courage to move the mountains of hate and deceit, poverty and abuse that plague your people. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
