Frontline Devotion for Wednesday, January 23, 2008 by Penny Risen
Isaiah 9: 2-7
“The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness --- on them light has shined …
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given. The government will rest on
His shoulders and He will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and
justice from the throne of His ancestor David for all eternity.
The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!”
New Living Translation Bible
If you haven’t had such a great day or week or year so far, my friend, see if this statement from the Prophet Isaiah, Verse 7, gets your motor running:
“The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!”
The pledge by God to make great things happen for His people, to send a life-changing force into our world, is a reaffirmation of His love for you and me. Not only has He sent the Messiah for us, He’s assigned Angel Armies to act in our lives with passionate commitment. Such a breath-taking statement can inspire us to blush at the fact that God has us and our small, human concerns on His “To Do list.”
Different Bible translations put it this way with no less
enthusiasm:
“The zeal of God-of-the-Angel-Armies will do all this.” The Message
“The work of the Lord of All Heaven and Earth will do this.“ New Life Bible
“The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” King James Version
This pledge is a wonderful testimony of how the Word reaches out and touches people’s lives in profound ways. We may be tired or discouraged today; one more step might seem one too many to make toward a distant goal; we may be poor in spirit and faint in faith; or hope might seem to be losing the tug of war with despair. But this promise of passionate Angel Armies committed to line up and to take our side in life’s battles is truly God’s light in our darkness.
Let’s remember to thank Him and His Angel Armies today, if we feel a bit emboldened and encouraged to keep trying and striving --- even when we did not think we had the strength.
Prayer for the day: Dear Lord, I appreciate Your presence in my life, Your grace when I fall and Your love when I’m weak in spirit. Forgive me when I think I’ve solved life’s mysteries alone, and I ignore Your constant and steady hand over all my days. Amen.
