Isaiah 42: 5-9
Isn’t it hard to know what to do about the proverbial guy or gal who stands on the street in poverty and says, “Buddy, can you spare me a dime?”
Do you hand out hard-earned cash when you don’t really know if it will help the person in the long run? Do you put money in the extended hand without question because someone asks? Is that justified? Do you question the beggar’s honesty or sanity? Do you pass by, ignore the request, and think, “Get a job!” ? Do you feel overwhelmed by the world’s needs and think, “I can’t help everyone, can I. This one will have to wait.”?
I can’t tell you what to do. I have failed many times to extend a helping hand to those in need out of fear or confusion.
What is clear in today’s Isaiah passage is God’s desire for us - the people of God - to continue to work for justice. God has cleared the way. A firm spiritual relationship has been cast between us and God. There’s no turning back. Empowered and strengthened by God, we are called to embody God’s word through gentleness, humility, and faithfulness in our time and on our streets. It’s time to move forward in God’s name – confident that God’s delight and spirit go with us.
So that guy or gal on the street who is part of God’s creation is our responsibility. Let’s work together to figure it out - justice for all – in this land of plenty. To the glory of God.
Prayer:God, you have promised to strengthen us for the work you call us to do. Give us courage and lead us to love and fairness for the sake of all who suffer. Walk with those who lack health, food, comfort, shelter, and love and prosper our work for the benefit of justice. Amen.
