Frontline Devotion for Thursday, March 29, 2007 by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg

Mark 13: 14-27

There is a lot of interesting stuff in the text today. It is speaking about the return of the Son of Man with some details. I find it fascinating how people in this culture get obsessed with the specifics of the end times. Many a writer has speculated about the end times. We have many who have profited handsomely from novels geared toward spelling out the details of the “end times”. I will give my bias here - to be obsessed with the details is to miss the point.

I believe the point of apocalyptic storytelling is to remind us that God will return and that we should live each day by faith. The images and reminders in the text are all about staying alert today. It is not putting our faith on snooze, on the backburner, or tabled to a later date (pick your preferred wording). It is about living as if Christ will arrive in the very next moment.

I think it is fair to say that most Christians have no concept of the imminent return of Jesus. What would happen if we recovered that way of thinking? How would that impact our lives and the lives of those around us?
