Frontline Devotion for Friday, March 23, 2007 by Mike Martine

Mark 11: 27-12: 12

What kind of tenants are we?

Are we welcoming? Are we open? Do we want to hear the word spoken, or do we only want to tell others what to do, what God has to say?

As we come closer to the end of Lent, we need to consider how we are not always welcoming to others, and how, in turn, we might be turning God away.

Sometimes we think, “This is our land, our place, our church” because we happen to be in “possession” of it.

But God has a habit of working through others, carrying the word to us through people we might not expect to hear it from. Certainly we would never be as crude or rude as the tenants of the vineyard—even to those with whom we disagree—but we should ask ourselves some questions in light of this parable…

Do we really listen to each other and others? Do we really live like we recognize that we still have much to learn? Do we greet others into our midst with the realization that they might be carrying a word from God?

What kind of tenants are we?
