Frontline Devotion for Thursday, March 22, 2007 by Dave Sonnenberg
Mark 11:12-26
“You have made (my house) a den of robbers!”
A den is a comfortable, safe haven. Some people refer to the den as the room in their house with the most comfortable furniture. It is a place where one can lounge and get away from the world. It is a place of retreat from responsibility.
Many people misuse this text. They merely say, “Jesus doesn’t want people selling anything in the lobby” If we are honest, I think most of us realize Jesus had more on his mind than that.
Go back to the image of den. Jesus seems concerned that some are using the temple as a way of fleeing from responsibility, fleeing from caring for others, fleeing from the need to share resources, fleeing from living as “true neighbors” to others. Following Jesus is never about retreating. It’s about engaging the world and others in more profound efforts to care and show compassion and to give voice to those who are poor and downtrodden.
