Signs All Around Us

A daily
Spiritual
Growth Opportunity

Frontline Devotion for Monday, March 12, 2007 by Fritz Foltz

Mark 8: 1-26

Pharisees ask Jesus to prove his authority by offering a sign from heaven, some word of great wisdom or some mighty act of power. They imply they would accept his authority if only he will give them some reason. Their endorsement would surely benefit his ministry as they were respected religious laymen who practiced very high ethical standards.

About the same time Jesus’ own disciples, who were expected to give unconditional loyalty to their rabbi, are upset because they have only one loaf of bread for their journey across the lake. They question his concern, because he does not seem to have planned well.

We shake our heads, because all this happens right after Jesus uses only seven loaves of bread and a few small fish to provide food for four thousand hungry people. And they had plenty left over.

Human nature never changes. There are signs of God’s love all around us, but we always insist on more. We constantly promise Jesus if he will just give us this one thing, we will stop asking for more. He does, and we don’t.

Some describe spirituality as simply awareness. The secret is to discern the signs of God’s loving presence that are all around us. Make sure you take time to look this Lent.

Let us pray: Open my eyes, Father, that I may see you at all times and in all places. And open my heart that I might feel your love. I ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
