Frontline Devotion for Sunday, March 11, 2007 by Brenda Kessler
Mark 7: 24-37
In today’s scripture reading Jesus was cautiously moving about the vicinity of Tyre and the Sea of Galilee because opposition to him and his message had been building in the area. However, it wasn’t long after he got there that a woman with a disturbed daughter approached him, begging for help. Help was given and the daughter was healed. Later he encountered some people who also had a healing request of him. Again help was given; healing happened. Jesus cautioned the people to “keep it quiet.” You know the rest of the story. The people could not be quiet. “…they talked it up all the more, beside themselves with excitement.”
As we move through this Lenten season we can only imagine how Jesus was feeling. The authorities were closing in on him. Anxiety was building. It was important to keep his whereabouts and his actions quiet. He was, after all, fully human. However, because of who he was and what he did, the people could not “keep it quiet.” The people were too excited to keep it quiet.
Does that same excitement exist for us today? Jesus will never tell US to keep it quiet. He paid the price for us. He freed us to talk it up all the more. We need to be beside ourselves with excitement. We need to talk about what he means to us and what he has done for us. Talk Him up!
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for paying the price for us. Thank you for all that you have done for us. Fill us with excitement to talk about you. Amen.
