Frontline Devotion for Monday, March 5, 2007 by Fritz Foltz

Mark 4: 35-5:20

High on the list of things about which we worry are the weather and evil people. Winds and seas can bring unforeseen catastrophes. Evil people can destroy our peace and security. We worry about these, because we know we have little power over them.

The Gospel proclaims Jesus does have control. Winds and sea obey him; evil spirits submit to his authority. Jesus is able to do what God does; he can create just like his Father.

Creation in the scriptures brings order from chaos. It is not a one-time, long-ago event but continues, constantly transforming evil into good. God continues his creation in Jesus’ ministry.

These are certainly among the most difficult miracles for us modern people to accept. We find it shallow to pray for good weather, as we understand to some extent the systems involved. We question if prayer is enough to cast out evil, because we know its complex and powerful causes.

Yet most of us still pray for these things, knowing God controls in mysterious ways beyond our understanding. We live unafraid, knowing he looks with love on his creation and continually cares for us.

Don’t be afraid to turn your worries over to Jesus. There is a time to act when what we do will make a difference, but there is also a time to trust Jesus’ care when nothing seems to work. There are bound to be times during Lent when worry starts to overwhelm you as events spin out of your control. That is the time to trust Jesus.

Let us pray: Enable me to have faith in the midst of chaos, Loving Father, knowing you still control all and promise the victory of good over evil. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
