Frontline Devotion for Thursday, March 1, 2007 by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg
I have begun to pay a little more attention to “lists” in the Bible. What I find is that sometimes, you get inspiration from an extra word or phrase attached or even just by taking the time to ponder- “why was this list put in the Bible?” Today, we get a list of familiar names- the 12 apostles who are sent out to preach and cast out demons.
What I like is hearing how Jesus handed out nicknames to some of them. Peter eventually go the nickname “The Rock”- the first century Rock, not the movie star. He also gave the nickname “Sons of Thunder” to two brothers- James and John. It’s worth just pondering- were these guys loud as could be? Could you hear them coming from a distance as their voices boomed or did they have big laughs or were they the center of attention in gatherings? Perhaps the thunder meant to their booming preaching. It’s fun to ponder.
Most often in my experience, nicknames are given to those we have affection for. I have no doubt that Jesus cared deeply for these 12 as he does for you. Which brings us to you. What would Jesus nickname you? As you think about that, remember that Jesus always was always “calling us to be more than we are right now”. He never was calling us to be less or never was there to tear down. When Jesus names us, he is building us up, encouraging us, and helping us to live with greater faithfulness.
Ponder what Jesus might nickname you. If you get stuck, use “beloved” because it is certainly true.
