Frontline Devotion for Thursday, February 1, 2007 by Dave Sonnenberg
We just installed the greatest thing in the world at our house - a laundry chute. I have no reason to complain as I am not the neatest person in the world, but our family method has been to heave your dirty clothes down the stairs from the top floor to the bottom floor. Countless times I walk in the front door and gotten nailed by a pair of jeans or pajamas. (I actually think everyone was watching me and timed their heave to coincide with my “arrival”)
This method drove me nuts for some reason. So, we finally installed a laundry chute. Very simple- everyone goes in the closet in our bedroom, opens a trap door and “walaah”- dirty clothes go right into the laundry basket located next to the washing machine.
You can guess how the kids reacted. They thought this was the greatest thing in the world. Drew shouted to Becca- “run downstairs” so I can talk with you. She bolted downstairs into the laundry room. He opened the trap door and they giggled and began talking.
Isn’t it amazing how exciting it is when “those above” can open a door and “speak to those below”? Or better yet, ‘isn’t it amazing that those above us” are interested enough to want to talk to us? You probably recognize that I am no longer speaking about kids playing around in a house. I am a firm believer that God somehow “opens” the door and yearns to engage us in conversation. In a sense, the life of Jesus is all about how God dared not only to open the door to humanity, but also dared to jump down and engage this world directly through word and speech. His Spirit continues to reach out and touch and engage us here on earth. Will we be open to listening?
I still believe God opens the door and delights in reaching out to us. He does it in many and various ways. Most often in my life, I experience God reaching out to me through other people. Some are words of affirmation and some words are times when others challenge me to be better at something or engage a situation in a different way. How about you?
God is reaching out in some way. Listen for it. A literal trap door or chute will not likely appear. But, God will be reaching out and saying, “let’s talk and let’s do this together.”
