Frontline Devotion for Sunday, January 28, 2007 by Brenda Kessler
Scripture: Jeremiah 1: 6-8 “‘Ah, Sovereign Lord,’ I said, ‘I do not know how to speak; I am only a child.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah…Jeremiah. How I love this Old Testament personality. The Lord is calling Jeremiah to be a prophet and he has doubts. “I am only a child,” says Jeremiah. Jeremiah is one of those biblical figures with whom I can identify.
I have not said those words exactly like Jeremiah but often I have said or thought similar words. “I can’t do that. You’ve got to be kidding. I’m not able to do that. That’s not where my gifts lie.” The request is repeated and again I have doubts. “You’re asking me? Why me?”
Perhaps you have had similar doubts. Perhaps you were told about a gravely ill church member in your neighborhood. “I can’t visit her. What would I say?” Perhaps you were asked to teach a Sunday school class. “I’m not qualified to do that. I don’t know my bible well enough.” Perhaps you were asked to head a financial stewardship drive. “Money? Talk about money? I can’t talk about money. That’s private stuff.” I’m venturing to say that all of us have had those “I can’t” moments.
Note, however, how the three assigned verses for today end. “‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.”
Learn to say “yes!” This morning the message is loud and clear. “‘Do not be afraid, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.”
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for calling us to do your work. Take away our doubts. Help us to say “yes” to your call. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
