Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Today's Frontline Devotion January 19, 2007 “Don’t you get it?” |
A daily |
Frontline Devotion for Friday, January 19, 2007by Mike Martine
Galatians 3:27-28: As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
Paul’s frustration with the Galatians is apparent here.
“Hey! Yeah, you! Stop it with the labels! You’re different now!”
It sure is good we don’t have these problems anymore, right? Good to know that we don’t label ourselves as Christians.
Of course, that’s nonsense, isn’t it?
We love those label things. “We’re traditional worship Christians.” “We’re contemporary worshippers.” “We’re Evangelical.” “We’re born again.” “We’re…” and on it goes.
Of course, we love the labels even more when we label others. (That’s more fun.)
Don’t we get it?
What we are is clothed by Christ. We’re never going to agree on everything. We’re never going to be all the same. We might not even agree completely on what being a “Christian” means.
But…we are clothed by Christ. And that means we, first and foremost, are united in the love of God and called to share that love with others.
Our differences? Secondary…by a long shot. And any time we forget this truth, we are missing the point.
Get it?
