Frontline Devotion for Saturday, April 2, 2005 By Brenda

John
14: 1-14
“Ask questions. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Ask
questions. If you have a question, at least one other person in the class
has the same question. Ask questions. Somebody’s life may depend
on the answer.” These comments were made over and over and over again
each time I moved to a new clinical area when I was studying to be a registered
nurse many years ago. Although our professors didn’t always give us
quick or easy answers and sometimes made us struggle for the answers on our own,
I have always been grateful for an educational institution that encouraged
asking questions.
Likewise I am grateful for a disciple named Thomas who asked questions. In
the 5th verse of the 14th chapter of John, Thomas asked, “Lord, we don’t
know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Thomas’
question allowed Jesus to give the answer that is, for me, one of Jesus’ most
important statements in the bible. “I am the way and the truth and the
life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (The NIV
Study Bible)
As I have attempted to walk the walk of faith I have found that the times when I
seemed to grow the most in my faith journey have been those times when I was
asking questions. Tough questions. Not-so-tough questions.
Questions…questions…questions. (I’m sure my confirmation pastor
never forgot me.) Although I didn’t always get quick or easy answers and
sometimes had to struggle for the answers on my own, I always felt God was
listening and probably saying, “It’s okay to ask questions. There is
no such thing as a dumb question. Ask questions. If you have a
question, at least one other person has the same question. Ask questions.
Your life may depend on the answer!”
Ask questions. Your life may depend on the answer.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord God, for the disciple, Thomas, who asked
questions. Thank you for giving him answers in the midst of his struggles.
Thank you for listening to our questions. Thank you for giving us answers
in the midst of our struggles. Thank you for giving us pastors, teachers,
family and friends who help to answer our questions. In Jesus’ name we
pray. Amen.
