Jesus Cleanses Temple

Frontline Devotion for Friday, March 4, 2005 By Mike Martine

Matthew 21: 12-17

Today we are reminded of the importance of Christ in our lives.

Christ cleanses the temple. Likewise, we all need the cleansing of Jesus, and, to that end, I invite you to pray with me…

“Oh Lord, come into the temple of my life and cleanse it. Knock over the tables of the moneychangers, even though I invited them in, even though they represent the things I love that turn me from you. Knock over the tables and make me clean.

“Lord come into the temple of my mind. Take from it the thoughts that turn me away from you. Not simply the ‘evil’ that exists there, but the more subtle evil: the fear, the doubt, the desire to be my own god. Knock over the tables, Lord, and make me clean.

“Lord come into the temple of my heart. Take from it all inclination to hurt others, the anger, the jealousy. But take not only those things that are obvious—remove the desire to make myself slave to my own whims, rather than to make your desire the desire of my heart. Knock over the tables, Lord, and make me clean.

“Lord come into the temple of my life. There always seems to be someone, Lord, who tries to steer me from your path. They use my own fear against me, my own self-doubt, my own desire to control. Do not allow me to succumb to evil; do not allow me to place self-preservation above the celebration of your name. Knock over the tables, Lord, and make me clean.

“Knock over the tables, Lord. Cleanse my life. And let me, in this new day, begin life in you again.”
