Be Like Little Children

Frontline Devotion for Saturday, February 12, 2005 By Brenda Kessler

Matthew 19:13-15 and Mark 10:13-16

In today’s scripture reading Jesus is blessing the little children. The disciples scolded those who brought them but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”  (The New International Study Bible: Matthew 19:14)

Why is it that Jesus uses little children to illustrate what God’s kingdom is like?  The answer for me is because of the innocence of little children.  They carry no “baggage.”  No explanations are needed; no answers are required from Jesus. For them the kingdom of God is a gift.

Author and lecturer Leo Passacaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge.  The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.  The winner was a four-year-old child whose next-door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.  Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman’s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.  When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.”

Little children do, indeed, have a lot to teach us about the kingdom of God!

Prayer:  Thank you, God, for welcoming little children into your kingdom.  Help us to be more like children.  Help us to let go of our baggage so that we, too, may further your kingdom.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
