The Yoke’s On You

Frontline Devotion for Tuesday, February 8, 2005 by Anne B. Crawford

Matthew 11:28-30

Can I get one more memo out today?  Can I find a few minutes to answer just a couple more e-mails and set up one more meeting and review just a few more documents before I leave for the day?  The last week and a half at work have been hectic.  Coming back from a two week vacation the work was piled up – at my job, at home, and even at church.  This past week I had meetings, rehearsals, or other church-related activities every single night.  To be honest, I’m pooped!  I’m worn out.

What a good time to stop and hear Jesus’ words – “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Great!  I need rest.  I need to feel like it’s not all my responsibility or all my fault.  Let someone else take over for awhile.  But while I want to just stop, Jesus’ promise of rest isn’t quite that simple.  He calls me to take his yoke and learn from him.  Weary as I am, Jesus calls me to walk and work with him – not trailing behind or trying futily to strain ahead –but side by side – taking my cues from his example and his teachings.  That is how I will find rest for my soul.

Where are you in your life’s journey?  Are you struggling – unyoked from God and trying to do everything alone and unaided?  Are you yoked but dragging behind or perhaps straining ahead?  The yoke of Christ is meant to bring us in step with him; to ease our burdens and rest our souls.  It’s hard to see yoking in a positive light in a society that glorifies the accomplishments and independence of the individual.  But the more I try to “do it all” on my own, the wearier I become and the more I need to yoke myself to Jesus.  His yoke is easy and his burden is light.

Gracious God, when we try to live apart from you we get so weary.  In those weary times, give us the desire to be yoked to Jesus.  Let his life guide ours so that we may find our rest in you.  Amen
