Frontline Devotion for Friday January 14, 2005 for By
Pastor Dave Sonnenberg
Text-
Matthew 4: 12-25
I want to talk about momentum today. We all have some ideas about momentum. A
person is in a resting state as they sleep at night, but when the alarm goes off
they get up. They get rolling. They drink their coffee. They get dressed. They
get out the door and the day begins. Thats a kind of momentum.
We might also think about how we roll a ball down a gradual slope. The ball
starts slowly but it picks up speed with each second. Thats momentum. A baseball
starts playing with renewed enthusiasm and all of a sudden, they seem to make
things happen. The hits seem to come naturally. They seem to catch all the
breaks. The players seem to come up with the big plays at just the right time.
Thats momentum.
When I think about momentum, I think about people or things on the move. I
generally think about momentum as an exciting thing (even though there can be
scary momentum brought on by evil). Todays story is about Jesus showing up in
public and getting the ball rolling. A few country fisherman saw something in
him that was different. They followed him and witnessed firsthand a powerful
momentum. Today the lesson speaks of how Jesus started healing people of
sickness and diseases. When the healings and his preaching began to be
proclaimed, it says large crowds started following. Word got around. The Jesus
movement was gaining momentum. 2000 years have passed but the momentum cant be
stopped.
I want Jesus to gain momentum in my life and in yours. I want to join the ride
as those first disciples did and see where God takes me. Lets get the ball
rolling.
Question-
How can Jesus gain momentum in your life? How can other help push the ball so
that Jesus becomes more and more a part of your life?
Give me any thoughts you have on spiritual momentum. Is it an image that you
connect with? Etc. etc.
Prayer- Lord Jesus, get us moving in your direction this day and in all the days
to come. Help us to think your thoughts and act as you would act. Help us to
encourage others in their life of faith so that they gain momentum and are
excited about following you. Bless us this day and help us to bless others.
