Writing Letters

A daily
Spiritual
Growth Opportunity

Frontline Devotion for Sunday, January 2, 2005 By: Brenda Kessler

Scripture for the day:  1 John 2: 12-17

In several translations of the bible, verses 12, 13, and 14 of 1 John, chapter 2, begin with the words, “I write to you…”  It is thought that the author – traditionally believed to be John, the son of Zebedee – is on intimate and affectionate terms with the group to which he is writing.  In these particular verses he is reminding his Christian friends that, in spite of rigorous tests, he is confident of their salvation.

This scripture especially spoke to me during this Christmas season because of the letters and notes we received from Christian friends. Many of the notes and letters contained not only news about themselves but messages of encouragement for us. They were letters of thanksgiving; they were letters filled with messages of Jesus’ love for us.

These Christmas letters reminded me that letter writing is not a lost art.  They reminded me that we, like the author of 1 John, can use the written word to encourage others in their faith; we can use the written word to send messages of thanksgiving; we can use the written word to share messages of Jesus’ love.

As we begin the year 2005 let us use the written word more often to encourage one another, to thank one another, and to assure one another of Christ’s love for us!

Prayer:  Thank you, God, for early Christian authors who wrote letters of encouragement to their friends and shared your love through the written word.  Thank you, God, for present day Christian friends who encourage us and share your love through the written word. Help us all to do better with our letter writing. Give us encouraging words and generous pocketbooks for the survivors of the tsunami.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
