GRATITUDE AND INTENTIONALITY

A daily
Spiritual
Growth Opportunity

Frontline Devotion for Saturday, March 27, 2004 By Pastor Dave Sonnenberg

Lord God, may the encounters I have this day be blessed by you.  Open my eyes to look for you in the midst of my interactions.  Inspire my actions so that I may represent you well.  Motivate me to think less of myself and a little more about my neighbors and the people around me.  Fill me with gratitude.  Amen.

I am one who believes that gratitude involves intentionality.  I find that rising in the morning and “giving the day to God” is a necessary spark.  I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t always do that, but when I do rise with prayers such as the one listed above, I am more aware of the holy in my midst.

The course of the day is filled with countless detours and countless things to divert us away from gratitude.  Many run from task to task as if “tasks” were the entire purpose of life.  We can run past people as if they were “objects”.  When we remember that “this is the day that the Lord has made” (each and every day), then perhaps we will begin to see the blessings in unexpected people and places.

It is important that you and I become disciplined and continually pay attention to God’s blessings- morning, noon, and night.  One of the greatest disciplines I can think of is to pause at the end of the day and simply think back over the encounters of the day- people met, things accomplished, places you went.  As you scan over the day, think about where God may have been blessing you.  Take the time to say thanks.

Question- Do you have a discipline that reminds you to be grateful?  If so, please share - pastordave@goodshepherdonline.org
