Prayer Without an Agenda

A daily
Spiritual
Growth Opportunity

Frontline Devotion for Monday, March 22, 2004, by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg

Prayer doesn’t always have to have an agenda.  Many times when we pray we think we have to ask for something or be actively sharing our thoughts and feelings with God.

What happens when you have little to say?  What happens if you are tired?  What happens if you talk all the time and want a rest?

I sometimes hear people say the phrase- “be still”.  “Be still and know that I am God”.   How can you and I learn to be still?

I envision this kind of prayer to be like when I golf with my dad.  There are many times on the golf course where we talk, but there are also many moments where we simply are walking the course without talking- simply enjoying being together.  It is kind of funny, but the moments of silence in the presence of my father are reassuring to me.   They remind me that I am loved, that I have had constant guidance throughout my life, and that he will be with me as I move ahead on my journey.  Words don’t always need to be spoken.  His presence conveys powerful messages to me.

Be still.  Experiment in your own way.  Find times where you are in God’s presence without an agenda.  See what happens.

Lord God, help us to be still.  Help us to put our words and our agenda’s aside.  Help us to “be still” and enjoy being in your presence.  Reveal yourself to us this day and in the journey ahead.  Help us to know with confidence that you walk with us on our ongoing journey.   Amen
