Frontline Devotion for Thursday, February 12, 2004,
by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg
Bible text:
Acts 21:1-16
I am one who believes that faith requires participation in community. I
personally need the witness of other believers who I can learn from and interact
with. I have learned from people who have experienced many joys and many
tragedies. I have learned from people who knew the road ahead was going to
be difficult, yet they faced it with great courage.
Consider the witness of St. Paul today. It was clear that as he marched
ahead, his life was going to be in danger. The fellow believers around him
were fearful for him and encouraged him not to plow forward. Paul stopped
their talk and reminded them of the important work he was called to do - namely,
to proclaim the message of Jesus. He heard the call to “play it safe
faith”, yet chose to trust in God or to embrace “the faith that endures”.
Think about the profound effect that his witness would have had on others.
I encourage you to take some time to think about people who take their faith so
seriously that they set aside self-concern and trust in the God who is eternally
concerned for his beloved children.
Paul had learned to trust in the everlasting embrace of God - an embrace that
would carry him through thick and thin. When we are exposed to people who
trust in that embrace - we too learn and grow in our faith.
