PALM - not Pilot, However!

Frontline Devotion for Tuesday, January 13, 2004, by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg

When I was in seminary, I used to go running around Gettysburg.  Upon leaving my apartment and locking the door, I put the key in the only place I felt it was going to be safe - in my hand.

I put it in the palm of my hand and wrapped my fingers around it.  You could say it would have made more sense to hide it near my apartment while I ran or buy some running clothes with pockets, but I chose to hold it in the palm of my hand.

I got used to the feeling of having that key right there.  I got used to holding it close in order to make sure I didn't lose it.  One thing is true- when you plant a small object in your hand, it is virtually impossible not to notice it.  It is there and you know it.  Try it yourself with any object.  Hold it for a while.

One of the most helpful images for prayer is placing our concerns in the palm of God's hand.  Our God is one who is always listening, always willing to hear us, always willing to keep us close.  I trust that God will never leave us or turn us away.  Placing your prayers is like putting yourself in the most secure place in the world - in the care of the creator and sustainer of the universe.  Pray to him, with him, and on behalf of others.

I seek to learn more in the days to come on what it means to put my prayers in God's palm.  Hopefully, you will too.

Lord God, you hear the prayers of all people.  Help us to give all our thoughts and concerns and joys to you.  Hold us in your palm.  Keep us close.  Help us live each day with confidence knowing that you will never drop us and never let us go.  Let us move forward in confidence knowing that your are present with us.  Amen.
