PRAYER FOR PUBLIC LEADERS AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP

It is primary season time.  Candidates are busy debating each other.  Howard Dean has recently been on the cover of Newsweek and Time.  TV coverage of our upcoming Presidential race is heating up.

It takes a lot of time and energy to follow it all.  Primary time and election time can be a time where polarities are emphasized.  Sometimes, the conversations turn very heated.  Still, in all - I hope that what all public leaders are doing is seeking to serve faithfully.

We live in times where we need responsible leaders and responsible citizens.   I recently came across a prayer that spoke to the call for both good leadership and good citizenship.  I found it in the Occasional Prayers section of the Lutheran Book of Worship.   I find that in the days to come, I will try and turn to it often.   Pray it with me:

“Lord, keep this nation under your care.  Bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth.  Help us to elect trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and thus serve you faithfully in our generation to the honor and glory of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen.” (LBW p.43)
