Frontline Devotion for Saturday, January 10, 2004, by

If you live in the Metropolitan Washington DC area, you would think that the
rest of the world ceased to exist this week. There seemed to be little concern
for world events, speeches from the President, or much of anything else other
than the hiring of Joe Gibbs as coach of the Washington Redskins. Gibbs had
been coach during the 80’s and early 90’s when the team won 3 Superbowls.
This week, I have encountered many people who are utterly ecstatic. The papers
speak of this man as the one who will lead the Redskins to the promised land. There is a sense of anticipation and yearning in the air. “Joe, bring back the
glory days. Bring us leadership. Bring us joy again after all these years.”
I think it’s great when teams get good leaders as Gibbs has proven to be. He
strikes me as a good example and a good human being. We need that in
professional sports. I think it’s great when people are excited about that
leadership. What I do say this day is that I hope that my life and your life
is charged up and excited over Christ in our life. Do we respond to the life
saving message of Christ with more passion and energy than all else? Are we as
charged up at sharing Christ’s ways with others as we are about sharing the
latest gossip from Redskins park? I hope that we are. I recognize that not
all are - so it reminds me that Christians are entrusted with the greatest, life
changing story in the world and we need to share it. For those who experience
Christ’s leadership in their life, will never see the world the same. Will you
be one to share the excitement of knowing Christ?
Lord God,
We give you thanks for leadership in this world and for people who make a
positive difference in this world. Help us always to remember that what changes
our life, more than all else, is your presence and leadership in our lives.
Bless us and give us the courage to share your saving love through our words
and actions. Lead us. Guide us. Transform our every day. Amen
