Frontline Devotion for August 29, 2003 by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg

 Matthew 17: 10-17

Nike had a campaign in recent years called, “I Can”.  Their advertising, their TV ads, and billboards all rallied around that theme- “I Can”.

It was clever and creative and captured many people’s imaginiation.  The advertising featured people doing great things and overcoming barriers because “they believed they could”.  It built on many people’s belief that if you work hard enough, you can do anything.

It was a clever and successful campaign but from a theological view, one only gets through so far in life with “I Can” as a motto.  “I Can” is a self-centered mindset if it becomes dominant.  But, even more important is the realization that humans are limited and they will always encounter their limits.

Today, the text is about a group of people bringing a boy to Jesus for healing.  They started by going to the disciples and said, (in my words) “he can’t” live life this way.  He needs something beyond himself.  Help him”.  The disciples tried to help, but ultimately they said, “we can’t.”

So, they went to Jesus.  And quite simply, where others said, “I can’t”, Jesus said, “I can and will help.  Bring the boy to me.”  The boy is then healed and restored to wholeness.

“Bring the boy/girl to me!”  That’s an order from Jesus.  I hope that you and I will dwell on that verse today for Jesus truly wants us in his midst.  We are all people in need of healing and wholeness.  We all have obstacles that hold us back to some level.  The power of positive thinking may help us a little, but it will only be partial.  Let us remember that Jesus orders us to be brought into his midst for his healing touch.  Where “we can’t”, let us remember that we are in relationship with the only one in the world who can truly say 100% of the time, “I Can”.

Prayer- Lord Jesus, you order us to come to you and we are thankful.  Touch our lives.  Bring us healing and wholeness.  Let us put our trust in you, the one “who can” bring us new life and hope.  Amen.
