Frontline Devotion for Tuesday, August 19, 2003 by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg
When we think of Christian worship, many think of the style of worship. They think about what is done at worship. They think about the style, the music, the structure, etc. Worship in the eyes of many is something done on Sunday.
I appreciated the growth in definition that N.T. Wright offered when he defined worship. He looked at that word and it’s meaning and said worship is “giving God all God is worth.” When I look at that definition, I think that applies to corporate gathering on Sunday (or some alternative time), but it also means that we WORSHIP in daily life.
As the text today shows, Jesus has no interest in rituals and corporate worship that is void of mercy and justice. He is not interested in having daily lives that are disconnected from the concern to better the world. True corporate worship drives us into the world to “worship” in daily living.
You and I “worship” each day when we rise and say, “I’m going to give to God and show him how much I value him.” If we instilled that in our heads and hearts each day, each day would be seeking opportunities to stand up and “right” the “wrongs” of this world. It would mean that would reach out to the downtrodden, those who are hurting, and those who need help in any way.
How can you “worship” this day? How can you show God how much he is worth by your actions this day? (If you’d like to share your thoughts, send me an email at pastordave@goodshepherdonline.org) Blessings in your daily worship. Give God your best. He’s worth it. Demonstrate it this day and in the days to come.
