Frontline Devotion for Friday, August 1, 2003 by Pastor Dave Sonnenberg

I confessed in my sermon last Sunday that I have a lot of room to grow in my prayer life. Even though, I find myself talking with God in ongoing conversation, I have so much to learn. Lately, I’ve been trying to hear about other’s prayer experiences so that I can learn how others pray. I’ve also heard some wonderful experiments.

While talking with a member of our staff yesterday, I learned that this person has been trying to pray each day for 5 situations or people that they might otherwise forget or ignore completely. My colleague spoke about how this advice found them praying for the people who collect the trash in their neighborhood at 6 am- long before many people wake up. This was but one example, but it was great advice.

I recently got the advice to discipline yourself to P.R.A.Y- which meant as you pray to remember to Praise, Repent, Another, and Yourself. My colleague’s advice added another rich idea- to challenge us to grow in awareness of our daily surroundings.

Challenge yourself this day to pray for 5 situations or people that you rarely think about. Who knows what that will reveal to you, but I bet that it will be very interesting. Keep at it as I will try to do. As my colleague has learned, the more you challenge yourself in this way, the more God will make you aware of countless blessings exist. Pray in this manner and see what surfaces. If you care to share what you discover, let me know.

Writing for you is a blessing. Thanks for listening, thanks for your prayers. Bless you in your daily ministries.

Prayer- Lord God, expand our awareness each and every day. Expand our prayer life and fill our thoughts with people and situations that we ignore. Broaden our perspective on life this day and in the days to come. Keep us in your care this day and enable us to be your faithful people. Amen.
