Frontline Devotion for Tuesday, July 1, 2003 By Fritz Foltz

Text for the Day: Mark 10:46-52

Just about every day I could look out my office window to watch Anita pass by. She would be there walking confidently behind her white cane. About 4:30 she would leave her office at the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind and travel home to cook her dinner. She was known to be a good cook, self-sufficient at the stove as she was in every other area of her life. And that included Church. Anita was a faithful member of my congregation, an inspiration to us all.

So you can imagine my surprise when one snowy afternoon I looked out the window to see her bumping into buildings, turning this way and that before hitting another obstacle. The goal was to cross the street, but over and over again she would take a wrong turn and end up frustrated.

Of course, I jumped up and ran to her aid. To tell the truth, I was more hesitant than that sounds, because I did not want to injure her pride. “Hey Anita. Do you need a little help?” “Oh, thank God. It’s you, Fritz. Yes, I could use a little assistance. It’s this snow. It confuses everything. Snow to a blind person is like thick fog to someone who sees. All I need is for you to point me in the right direction, and I’ll be fine.” So that is what I did, turned her around, pointed her to the correct cross walk, and watched her march off, confident as ever.

It occurred to me this is much like repentance. Too often in our lives, we find ourselves confused, running into all sorts of obstacles, headed in exactly the wrong direction. At those times we are not sure what to do and often get ourselves completely turned around. That is time to forget about our pride and ask for help. That is a time for stopping and repenting, rethinking our situation. That is the time to ask God once again to turn us around and point us in the right direction.

Let us pray: Father, come to us in every moment of confusion, denial, and sin. Turn us around and point us in the right direction, that we might find our way to our home in Christ. We pray in his name. Amen.
