Frontline Devotion for Sunday, June 29, 2003 By Pastor Dave Sonnenberg

Today is the day in which we remember St. Peter and Paul in church. Both of them played central leadership roles in the early Christian movement. As I look at them, I see people who were flawed, who had issues, yet God’s Spirit worked through them. They were instruments of God.

There are many beautiful musical instruments. The trumpet, the saxophone, the cello, a grand piano are just a few of the countless instruments that look good in a room. The thing to remember is that they are useless without the musician’s breath or fingers, or bow.

In our case, we who are instruments of God are indeed beautiful people. This day, we must also acknowledge that we all need the breath of God or his Spirit so that we can be his instruments of hope and healing in the world. St. Peter and Paul would have been mere asterics in the history book had it not been for the power of God at work in their lives. Their lives however are a reflection of what happens when one allows the Spirit to work in your lives.

My prayer is that we remind ourselves daily that we are instruments of God.  We can’t play alone however, for we need the daily Spirit of God to enlighten us and help us be faithful instruments.

Blessings to you this day.
