Frontline Devotion for Monday, June 16, 2003 By Anne Crawford
When I was young, I used to imagine what type of person I might be when I grew up. I would be tall (ha!), thin (sadly, no), beautiful, famous and glamorous, and have some really cool career. Great expectations, perhaps, but not realistic. Fortunately, my expectations didn’t keep me from knowing and accepting the reality of who I am.
In today’s reading, the Jews had great expectations for Jesus. They had a very definite idea of the type of Messiah they were expecting and Jesus most certainly did not fit the bill. “If you are the Christ tell us plainly,” they said, and Jesus did. But, they still didn’t believe because Jesus didn’t meet their expectations. Their expectations had become prerequisites for belief.
What are your expectations for Jesus? What do you require of Jesus in order to believe? Are you willing to let go of your expectations and let Jesus change your vision of His place in your life?
Prayer: Lord, help us not to confine you with our limited expectations of who you are or ought to be. Rather, help us to be open to fulfill your expectation of whose we are. Amen
