Frontline Devotion for Thursday, June 5, 2003, by Brenda Kessler
Text for the day: Matthew 5:38-42
The 42nd verse of the 5th chapter of Matthew says, “Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.” The notes in my “New International Bible, Study Version,” say that these words are probably not a general requirement to give to everyone who asks but are a reference to the poor.
A few years ago the young adult professional of some dear friends of ours worked in downtown DC. Daily she commuted by metro and daily she took an extra sandwich with her so that she would not turn away from a hungry, begging street person but would, instead, respond with a sandwich, a gift from the heart to one of God’s children.
Countless opportunities present themselves to us almost on a daily basis to give to someone who wants to “borrow from us.” Do we respond as did our friend’s daughter or do we turn away?
Jesus asks us to “give to the one who wants to borrow from us”…to give to the hungry…to give to the poor.
Prayer: Oh most loving Lord, forgive us when we miss opportunities to serve you. Help us to see YOU in all of your children. Help us to “give to the one who wants to borrow from us.”
