Good Shepherd Lutheran Church
What is Confirmation?
Baptism of babies and young children is customary in the Lutheran church. During the service of Baptism parents promise to raise their children in the Christian faith by bringing them to worship services, teaching them the Lord’s Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Ten Commandments. Parents promise to give their children a Bible and bring them to Sunday school. When the children get older, it is the parents’ responsibility to bring them to Confirmation programs.
At Good Shepherd our Confirmation program is for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Confirmation students (confirmands) spend three years learning about the Christian Church and what Lutheran Christians believe. At the end of eighth grade, each confirmand is ready to choose to continue in the church as an adult member.
The Confirmation worship service is very special! Eighth graders affirm (confirm) their Baptism by publicly proclaiming their belief in the Christian faith. Surrounded by family and friends, they celebrate moving forward as young adults in the church. The 2008-09 program will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2009.
Confirmation is a beginning. There are many opportunities for youth to become involved in the church and continue their faith development. Faith is an incredible asset. It helps us enjoy a more fulfilling life that glorifies God and provides a strong foundation for anything we face.
